What Is Tree Inspection?

Trees stand for years, unassuming and often undeterred. However, sometimes there may be problems creeping through it that you might not easily notice and that could cause serious long-term issues. Tree inspections are professional examinations of the health of your tree based on its structure and surroundings. Led by a trained arborist, a tree inspection will involve looking at the bark, branches, and other parts to determine its general health.

The main goal of a tree inspection is to identify any health issues that might cause problems in the future, such as predicting whether a weak tree might fall and damage your property. Tree inspections can also help identify any viruses or diseases that your tree carries and might spread to other plants.

What Does Trimming Entail?

Tree trimming involves cleaning up a tree’s shape and appearance for both the purposes of healthy growth and aesthetics. The trimming process will remove overgrown branches from trees, which is important because overgrown limbs may block sunlight to certain parts of the tree, preventing growth. Trimming can also prevent unnecessary branches from taking over the tree’s nutrients and sunlight.

From the perspective of aesthetics, trimming can also keep the shape of a tree. When left unmaintained, branches can overgrow and overcrowd, creating an unbalanced shape. Trimming off extra limbs and thinning out branches can keep your trees looking neat and clean, as well as further promote healthy growth by removing nutrient-leeching limbs.

What Is Tree Pruning?

While tree trimming is focused on cutting down overgrown branches to preserve the growth and aesthetic of a tree, tree pruning involves removing dead or otherwise diseased branches from a tree. The main purpose of tree pruning is to prevent the spread of diseases from these branches to the rest of the tree. Pruning can also help remove pests that have been holing up in the dead or diseased branches.

When to Trim & Prune Trees

There is no formula for when you need to have your trees trimmed and pruned, as it mostly depends on your personal preference for the look and perceived health of the tree. Generally, trimming is done at least a couple of times a year to maintain awkward and overgrown branches, and pruning is typically done annually after the tree’s blooming cycle (mid-summer for spring-flowering trees and winter or spring for summer-flowering trees and fruit trees).

If branches are blocking your windows or you are worried about overextending branches that might fall onto your home, it is a good idea to consult an experienced arborist to diagnose the health of your tree and help prevent future issues that an undermaintained tree may elicit.
